Early Life and Humble Beginnings

Born on June 29, 1978, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Nicole Prascovia Elikolani Valiente, popularly known as Nicole Scherzinger, comes from a diverse heritage reflecting Filipino, Native Hawaiian, and Ukrainian ancestries. Her father, Alfonso Valiente, left the family when Nicole was two years old. This prompted her mom Rosemary to meet and eventually marry Gary Scherzinger, a German-American who not only became Nicole’s stepfather but also adopted her, leading her to carry the Scherzinger surname.

The family relocated to Louisville, Kentucky, where Rosemary worked as a clerk, and Gary pursued a career as a welder. The move marked a period of financial challenge for the Scherzinger family, and Nicole, even at a young age, contributed by waitressing, taking up local modeling gigs, and becoming part of an entertainment troupe at the local amusement park, Kentucky Kingdom.

At the age of 14, Nicole embarked on her artistic journey by joining the Actors Theatre of Louisville, landing her first professional role in the play La Bête. After graduating from the Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS) at DuPont Manual High School in 1996, Nicole participated in various plays, including a memorable portrayal of Alice in Wonderland. Securing the role over competitors with blue eyes and blonde hair, Nicole’s talent did not go unnoticed. In 2007, she earned a place in the DuPont Manual Alumni’s Hall of Fame, making her one of its youngest inductees.

Continuing her pursuit of the arts, Nicole earned a scholarship to Wright State University, majoring in theatre arts with a dance minor. During this period, she seized lead roles in regional productions of Chicago, Guys and Dolls, and Show Boat. Her college journey took an unexpected turn when Days of the New band leader Travis Meeks enlisted her vocals for their self-titled second studio album. Despite initially flourishing, creative differences emerged, prompting Nicole to leave college and embark on the album’s supporting tour. While the collaboration with Meeks had its challenges, Nicole’s undeniable talent as an entertainer shone through.

In recognition of her achievements, Nicole received the 2017 Alumna of the Year Award from the Wright State Alumni Association in 2018, paving the way for her rise to stardom in the world of entertainment and the arts.

Career and Popularity

Nicole Scherzinger’s remarkable career is marked by diverse experiences and notable achievements. Her journey into the spotlight began in 2001 with the formation of the girl group Eden’s Crush through the reality series “Popstars USA.” Despite the group’s initial success with hits like “Get Over Yourself,” the dream was short-lived as their label faced bankruptcy, leading to the group’s disbandment by the end of 2001.

Undeterred, Scherzinger’s path took a turn toward acting, with noteworthy appearances in television shows like “My Wife and Kids” (2002) and a cameo in the independent comedy “Chasing Papi” (2003). However, there was more in store for her as she embraced a pivotal role as the lead singer in the iconic burlesque troupe, The Pussycat Dolls.

The Pussycat Dolls era (2003–2009) marked a significant chapter in Scherzinger’s career. As the lead vocalist, she played a vital role in the group’s meteoric rise to fame, with their debut album “PCD” (2005) featuring chart-topping hits like “Don’t Cha,” “Stickwitu,” and “Buttons.” Having sold more than 55 million records globally, The Pussycat Dolls stand as one of the most successful female groups of all time.

Despite facing challenges and creative differences, Scherzinger’s popularity soared, prompting her to sign a global publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group in 2006. Her solo endeavors emerged with features on songs like Avant’s “Lie About Us” and Diddy’s “Come to Me,” both showcasing her vocal prowess. The planned release of her debut solo album, “Her Name is Nicole,” faced delays and eventual shelving, prompting Scherzinger to refocus on The Pussycat Dolls’ second album, “Doll Domination” (2008).

Following the group’s hiatus in 2009, Scherzinger embraced various opportunities. She won “Dancing with the Stars” in 2010, served as a guest judge on “The X Factor UK,” and portrayed Maureen in Neil Patrick Harris’ Hollywood Bowl production of “Rent.” Her solo career took center stage with the release of “Poison” and her debut album, “Killer Love” (2011), featuring chart-toppers like “Don’t Hold Your Breath” and “Right There.”

Scherzinger’s television ventures, including roles in “The X Factor” and “I Can Do That,” showcased her versatility. Amid the challenges in her solo music career, her foray into musical theatre received critical acclaim, notably as Grizabella in the revival of “Cats” (2014).

In the subsequent years, Scherzinger continued to explore her artistic boundaries, releasing “Big Fat Lie” (2014) and taking on roles in projects like “Dirty Dancing” (2017) and “Moana” (2016). Her fragrance line, “Chosen by Nicole Scherzinger,” and a voice cameo in “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (2018) further highlighted her diverse talents.

The recent years have seen Scherzinger’s triumphant return with her role as a judge on “The Masked Singer” and a successful reunion with The Pussycat Dolls in 2019. While the planned reunion tour faced obstacles, Scherzinger’s resilience and commitment to her craft shine through her ongoing solo endeavors, including a new EP titled “Warrior.”

As she ventures into interior design with her ‘Nalu’ range and continues her musical pursuits with the release of “The Drop” in collaboration with David Guetta, Nicole Scherzinger remains an unstoppable force, captivating audiences with her dynamic talents.

This year, the Grammy-nominated and former Pussycat Dolls’ lead vocalist is set to grace Broadway with her debut performance in “Sunset Boulevard.” Having previously portrayed the role of Norma Desmond in London, earning acclaim and an Evening Standard Theatre Award, Scherzinger will take the stage alongside Tom Francis as Joe Gillis, Grace Hodgett-Young as Betty Schaefer, and Olivier Award winner David Thaxton from the successful London production that commenced last September.

The production, penned by Andrew Lloyd Webber and directed by Tony-nominated Jamie Lloyd, boasts a stellar creative team featuring Soutra Gilmour for set and costume design, Fabian Aloise for choreography, Alan Williams as music supervisor and musical director, among others.

The narrative unfolds as Norma Desmond, played by Scherzinger, haunted by memories and dreams, yearns to reclaim her place on the silver screen. A struggling screenwriter, portrayed by Francis, becomes her potential savior, leading to a perilous and captivating relationship with disastrous consequences. “Sunset Boulevard” delves into the characters’ ambitions, frustrations, and their intoxicating thirst for fame and adoration, all set against a backdrop of champagne-soaked cynicism.

Congratulations, Nicole, for this great milestone in your singing career!
